Day 96 - The Yukon

John and I flew to Whitehorse, Yukon for the chance to see the Northern Lights. Here are some photos from the trip.

We arrived in the evening with snow everywhere. We put on our warmest layers and ventured around town to test our gear. We cleared some space on a ledge so that we could sit still and see what it would be like to be sitting still waiting for the Northern Lights. This is us comparing our ability to clear out some snow. Mine is on the left. John’s is just noticeable on the right.

Our view of downtown Whitehorse.

Breakfast at Baked Café before a day of snow shoeing and dog sledding.

Waiting for our ride to pick us up. I think we were left behind 😩

A moose in our hotel lobby. This thing was MASSIVE!

Heading up to a mountain, driven by the owner of the tour company. Looks like we were left behind and the owner had to hustle to our hotel to pick us up.

The scratches on the windshield was a common sight on cars in Whitehorse. They lay gravel on the roads rather than salt. When driving behind other cars, it’s easy for gravel to be kicked up and hit your windshield. It’s so common that it’s not worth replacing the windshield until it’s almost destroyed.

This was the funnest activity of the day. Our guide narrated how similar the dogs are to people, especially when working as a team. The younger dogs learn from the more experienced ones. How the dogs at the front lead the direction of the pack, and listen out for the guide’s direction (left, right, stop, go). Not all dogs enjoy being leaders, so they rotate them around to see what works best. This was fascinating!

John packs his bag, getting ready for the Northern Lights.

This is inside one of the huts we stay in while waiting for the skies to be clear enough to see the Northern Lights. There’s a wood heater in the middle, some snacks, tea and coffee, and lots of chatter.

Outside the huts was a campfire and log seats.

The guides would entertain us by having us throw boiling water into the air for the gram shot.

The Northern Lights.
